What is Psychotherapy?

I provide individual psychotherapy to adults of all ages and to adolescents. The information below is intended to help you understand what psychotherapy is and how it can help you.

Psychotherapy begins with a longing. Your longing might be for better relationships, more trust in yourself, less anxiety, feeling worthy and lovable, or feeling connected to your passion and purpose in life. In psychotherapy we safely stay in the present moment while gently looking at the past. In contrast to counseling, psychotherapy is viewed as more of a long-term exploration process that focuses on how our past experiences contribute to our current personality, patterns of thinking and behaving, styles of relating to people, fears, and self-esteem. In psychotherapy, you use the insight you gained from exploring the past to figure out what needs to be resolved or healed in the present. The inevitable outcome of this process if for you to have more freedom to consciously choose a future that is no longer controlled by the past.

Psychotherapy can help you to…

  • Let go of feeling “not good enough” and move toward self-appreciation.
  • Make conscious choices about what you want and need to feel happy and secure.
  • Heal wounds from childhood or traumatic experiences that contribute to anxiety and depression.
  • Release resentment, guilt, anger, fear, and sadness that keep you feeling stuck.
  • Cultivate freedom, joy, gratitude and contentment with who you are and where you are in life.
  • Learn how to set boundaries and engage in healthy communication in your relationships.
  • Engage in honest self-expression to actualize your authentic self.
  • Create a future that is aligned with who you are and what you want.
  • Gain coping skills and self-care strategies to support you through life’s challenges.

In psychotherapy we work together to find a balance between focusing on the present concerns and the possible contributing factors from the past. By achieving this balance, individuals feel empowered to confront the current problems they are facing, and build the future they want.
